Sweet Pea (Lathyrus odoratus)

Sweet Peas
-  Sweet peas are an annual climber that belong to the Lathyrus family. They are a highly fragrant species, and bees love them. Some varieties of sweetpea grow to be as tall as 4ft, so some sort of support may be required. Sweet peas are self seeding, which can either be collected of left to their own devices.

Sweet smelling Sweat Peas

The Spencer variety of sweet pea is possibly the most popular sweetpea grown. They have wonderful strong, long stems, topped with the most beautiful scented flowers you could ever imagine.  These sweetpeas can be left to roam freely or can be supported by canes or trellis work.

Garden Project is a fun packed site full of useful hints & tips about your garden and it's surroundings. Sweet peas are one of my favourites. Mine were a bit of a disaster this year, as the weather wasn't at its best, I also planted them in shallow compost, and they struggled a little bit. Sweet peas like space to grow, and they like to be kept moist as well. To prolong the flowering season, snip off the flowering stems frequently, this will encourage more flowers to bloom.
