Sweetcorn needs warmth and sunshine if it is to ripen properly, it is a tall plant and may need staking to stop it from blowing over. Eat the ripe cobs as soon as they are picked, and never let them lie around as they soon deteriorate.

There are many different varieties of carrot available these days, so don't stick to the uniformed regularity of the mass produced supermarket variety! Try round carrots, stubby carrots, hairy carrots or white carrots. I do tend to grow curly carrots myself, mainly due to too many stones in the soil!

Kale is an easy to grow vegetable and is generally trouble free. As you can see, kale can be harvested at any time of the year, as it withstands even the hardiest of frosts.

Swiss chard is not only grown for its edible, spinach like leaves, but also for it's colour. Both Swiss chard and spinach beet are related to the beetroot family, and this shows through the vibrant red of the stems.
