Garden Sheds

A garden shed is a must.  A place for everything, and everything in its place (well that’s how it goes in theory!)

Garden sheds can be made from wood, metal or plastic.  They come in all shapes and sizes.  Choose one that is specific to you.  What do you want to use it for? Tool storage? It depends on the amount of tools you have!  A few spades and forks can be kept in a smaller shed, but if you want to put your bulky mower in there too, a larger shed would be required.

We needed extra storage, and decided to have a garden shed (or 2!).  The first thing you have to consider is location.  We already had a concrete base in the garden, but over the years it had deteriorated and needed replacing.  We enlisted one of our sons to do the manual labour.  (He’d do anything for one of mum’s bacon butties!).  We cleared the old base away and realised that it wasn’t large enough, so we started to excavate at the back of the garden.  This particular area was a mess.  Piles of rubble had been dumped against a wooden fence, and over the years the fence had buckled and collapsed.  To get to the fence we had to dig out approximately 5 tons of rubble.  We decided to hire a skip to get rid of the rubbish.  We excavated a multitude of relics over the next few days.  We discovered an old motorbike and a mini car, amongst old tiles, carpets and plastic bags full of glass and rubble.  Once the area had been cleared, we realised the garden was large enough to facilitate two large garden sheds.  We laid a concrete base to sit the sheds on.

Choosing a shed
We wanted a multi-purpose shed.  We needed space for excess furniture, a tumble dryer and power tools.  Steve wanted a large workspace for making his home brew, and I wanted secure dry space to store old paperwork and decorating materials (including ladders).  Above all this we needed to store our garden equipment, which included a lawn mower.

We opted for two large metal sheds.  The Yardmaster Green 1010GEYZ Metal Shed fit the bill.  We scoured the Internet and found a reputable company that sold all sorts of sheds.    We decided to erect the sheds ourselves.  It took days!  We highly recommend that you pay the extra to have the shed erected if the option is available!  Metal sheds don’t need much looking after once they have been erected, whereas wooden sheds need to be treated annually with wood preservers.  Our two sheds stand proud in our garden, and we now have loads of storage space.

Top Tip: During the awful summer of 2007, we found that water collected on our shed floor, so we painted a layer of tar around the outside edges to act as a barrier.
